Self Defence

JuJitsu

Translated, JuJitsu means 'Gentle-Art'. It was originally developed to meet the needs of a constantly warring Japanese feudal society and to give warriors an un-armed system of fighting to combine with, and complement their weapons based systems on the battlefield.

The Academy's syllabus consists of Jishukan JuJitsu Ryu initiated by Soke Shuho Sugita in Yokohama, Japan 1947. Translated as 'school for self/personal development' it was designed as a pure modern self defence art incorporating Judo, JuJitsu and Kempo.

Personally taught to Soke Peter Morgan B.E.M., O.A., M.A.(T) (10th degree black belt) by master Sugita, it incorporates the skills of Judo/JuJitsu featuring an assorted mix of strikes, blocks, evasive manoeuvres, grappling, immobilisation & joint locks, choking & strangulation, application of pressure points, dislocation techniques, throwing & breakfalls. It also includes the kicking, punching and blocking skills of Karate.

Founded in Queanbeyan in 1962, the club teaches the original Jishukan Ryu style as taught by master Sugita before his death in 1982. The skills taught use the attacker's strength to the defenders advantage. These defensive strategies aim to initially evade, then to disable attackers and finally immobilise them.

Due to the lethal nature of JuJitsu, classes are conducted in a formal environment where students are required to follow a strict etiquette standard. Over time students will begin to develop a high level of self control and strong morals.

The Academy is made up of 16 branches around Australia, with 8 in Queanbeyan /Canberra. All instructors hold First Aid Certificates and donate their time freely, only charging fees to cover the running costs of the club.
